Winter snowshoe hike on the Superior Hiking Trail in Duluth

Normally this time of year I'm spending most of my outdoor time on a bike. Ever since I got a fat snowbike in 2006. This weekend I was feeling under the weather. But not so much that I couldn't stop myself from getting out on a gorgeous winter day. I grabbed my snowshoes and headed out the door. Two blocks up my street is a short trail that leads to the old abandoned stone quarry. Ice climbers can usually be found on a day like this. However, the ice must have been too brittle and they were climbing the rock face instead. You can see a red dot on all three of these quarry pictures. It's a climber.

I took a short trail along the side of the quarry, ending at the top. Views of Duluth, Superior, WI, the harbor and Lake Superior in the distance.
I climbed uphill and crossed Skyline Parkway.

I continued climbing up the steep ridge.

Near the top I came out onto the Superior Hiking Trail.
It was a beautiful, calm, sunny day with temps around the mid-teens. Spectacular winter conditions to be outside in.

It felt good to soak up some sunshine after a week of cloudy days.

I bought these snowshoes for deep powder and winter camping in the Boundary Waters. Not really needed today on the packed down trail. If I had wanted to go off trail, they would have been ideal.

Time to descend back down. It was an incredible day. Glad I got out. Hard to believe I live in a place I can access this kind of terrain, with views, right from my front door.

  • Lovely!!

And what a workout climbing all the way up to Brewer Park!

And now that I know the snowshoers have been on the trail I am eager to get out there and explore in my running shoes ;->
